Comfort Paintings
December 21, 2006
You know how some people talk of "comfort food"? My personal favorite comfort food would have to be a grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of tomato soup. It reminds me of when I was little. Especially of one winter afternoon when I was four years old and my mother made a fine lunch of it after a snowstorm. My sister and I sat in the warm kitchen at a small table by the window looking out at the brightness of it all.
I think about some paintings in that way. There are some paintings that are quite comforting to me. There is a certain something about these paintings that lifts my spirits. It usually has something to do with the quality of light in a painting or some other intangible element that attracts me to the painting. So, for this week, I give you thirteen comfort paintings.
1. Tade de verano en la playa by Peder Severin Kroyer

2. Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent

3. Under the Horse Chestnut Tree by Mary Cassatt

4. Afternoon Fun by Edward Henry Potthast

5. Mountainous Landscape Behind Saint-Paul Hospital by Vincent Van Gogh

6. Winter by Maxfield Parrish

7. Chagrin d'Enfant by Emile Friant

8. Twilight by Maxfield Parrish

9. White Birches in the Snow by Maxfield Parrish

10. At the Beach by Edward Henry Potthast

11. Baby Reaching for an Apple by Mary Cassatt

12. Tarde de verano en Skagen, 1892 by Peder Severin Kroyer

Great list!

What gorgeous paintings, and such a diversity of style. Many of these I've never seen before, so this exposure is appreciated.
Happy TT! I hope you do more TTs in this vein.

Theses are all fantastic paintings. So many beach scenes. I love the beach....It's one of my favorite places to go.
You won a link over at my spot for all of the info you gave in your comment for my WW this week. Great sleuthing! I need to find something more obscure! :)

I love your post and especially the Cassat paintings. But my favorite has to be Birches in Snow, since we won't have a white Christmas in this part of NY.

I enjoyed seeing the Maxfield Parrish on your list. I have a Parrish calendar in my office and often am distracted by the very still beauty of the print. Although so vivid and bold with color, his pictures consistently reflect a surreal or even at times ethereal quality to them. Just lovely.

What a lovely TT! I love Cassatt and Sargent. Some of these are new to me -- will have to check them out!

Oh, #6! Something so secure, so comforting, about a man hiking through snow with a basket of something.

And bearded, like my hubby and Papa.
Thanks so much for sharing these!
These paintings are beautiful! I can't decide which is my favorite...I'm rather intrigued by #11.
Thanks for stopping by and visiting my blog! I don't turn 40 until 2009 and thought it would be great fun blogging about the experience (this is my first blog & I'm enjoying it quite well!)
Gracie was very pleased that someone looked at her TT version! My youngest wants do something similiar as well!
If you are able to record your daughter playing the piano...I would love to hear it! I bet it is absolutely beautiful!
Merry Christmas to you & your family!

I like the light coming through the trees in the Maxfield Parrish painting, but my especial favorite is of the impish girl (is she pouting a little?) being cuddled by her mother, as it reminds me of my Cornflower. I think she enjoys the cuddling, for all her pouty face, and may break into a reluctant grin at any moment!
Have a Merry Christmas! And thanks for all your kind comments on my blog. :o)
