Tree bark, I say. If you look closely, you can see a ghost chasing a little boy with a backpack! :)

Okay, for those of you anxiously awaiting my final answer... This is a picture I took one day while walking through a meadow. I saw two trees with the most interesting looking bark. The trees were not far from a small brook. I wish I had taken pictures of the entire tree to get a better idea of what kind of tree it was. I wasn't thinking of identifying the tree at that moment, though. I was too interested in the bark's photographic potential. Ah, well... Does anyone out there recognize this bark?

Definitely tree bark--we have the same tree in front of my house. Maybe a kind of maple?

Scrolling through the Nature Blogroll - I like your site. Before reading the (half) answer...I guessed bark of a sycamore tree, perhaps eucalyptus with all those colors...
