O.E. (Old English) claene "clean, pure," from W.Gmc. (West Germanic) *klainoz "clear, pure," from PIE (Proto-Indo-European) base *gel- "to gleam" (cf. Gk. (confer/compare Greek) glene "eyeball," O.Ir. (Old Irish) gel "bright").
You didn't know you were going to get an etymology lesson today, did you? Now, go look up "Clara" for further connections. This is, afterall, a photo of her eye.
