Part Two: Nature

I

NATURE, the gentlest mother,
Impatient of no child,
The feeblest or the waywardest,---
Her admonition mild

In forest and the hill
By traveller is heard,
Restraining rampant squirrel
Or too impetuous bird.

How fair her conversation,
A summer afternoon,---
Her household, her assembly;
And when the sun goes down

Her voice among the aisles
Incites the timid prayer
Of the minutest cricket,
The most unworthy flower.

When all the children sleep
She turns as long away
As will suffice to light her lamps;
Then, bending from the sky,

With infinite affection
And infiniter care,
Her golden finger on her lip,
Wills silence everywhere.

Emily Dickinson (1830-86)

Lily quit taking naps when she was six weeks old, so this is a rare glimpse of my child sleeping. She had been up all night at a sleepover and, although she fought valiantly, she finally succumbed to sleep in our backyard swing. As the sun slid down the sky, I began to wonder if she would continue there into the evening. She arose at dusk, though, never knowing I had taken her picture.

It is a lovely and tender photo...but ack! I don't think I could survive if my children had quit napping at six weeks...

What a beautiful composition. The photo is so lovely, the colors and of course, your beautiful daughter. that poem by Dickinson is one of my favorites. In fact, I use it for prayer. Thank you so much.

terrific photo! lily really is a beautiful young woman.

i have one who didn't nap either! it would be a rarity indeed to find her napping now (at 11 years of age).

As Mother's Day approaches and before I forget...the Lord put you upon my heart and I wanted to stop by and let you know that I am praying for you.

I don't mean that to sound as though I will forget you...came out wrong, but I'm going through a personal issue myself, and didn't to get too involved with my situation and be unable to stop by and tell you that I am praying for you. That came out much better.
